Step 2: Prioritize

Once your team has taken stock, it is time to decide how the team wants to focus their change efforts.

We recommend a strength- or asset-based approach. This focuses on building up existing personal and collective strengths among young people, their families, their communities, and any services and supports available. This does not mean that you should ignore problems and gaps.

When deciding how to focus your change efforts, ask:

  • Which protective factors, risk factors, and social determinants of health affect the lives of many youth in our community?
  • Which groups of youth face social and economic exclusion in our community? How does this affect their experiences of protective factors, risk factors, and social determinants of health? Is this different from youth as a whole?
  • Which protective factors, risk factors, and social determinants of health can be changed? Which ones would be hard to change? Why? Which ones would be easier to change? Why?
  • Which protective factors, risk factors, and social determinants of health does our team have a good chance of influencing? (Consider your time and resources, who needs to be influenced, and your ability to reach and influence these people.)
